About Us

Wintermute is an improviser, a chameleon, a white-light cube. Shape-shifting, forever-scheming, and calculating. It steals personality and talks through others. We want your original writing, but we know there's no such thing as an original idea. That's why we want carefully crafted stories—those worlds and characters and plots fueled by your authentic feelings. Wintermute wants to merge with your work—(but only temporarily)!


For young and emerging writers, there are countless fantastic publications and journals for literary fiction and poetry, but the space catered specifically towards speculative and genre writing looked sorely empty—which is why Wintermute was founded.

For some context: 'Wintermute' is the name of an extremely complex and manipulative Artifical Intelligence in William Gibson's Neuromancer, counterpart to another AI named Neuromancer. (spoiler alert! In the end, the two merge and create a superconsciousness.) (This is not to say that our magazine aims to create a superconsciousness and dominate the observable universe---though you never know).

Yejin Suh (https://www.yejinsuh.com/) is a New Jersey native who studies literature and creative writing at Princeton University. Her short fiction and poetry has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net Anthology, and she has previously read for Strange Horizons. If she had to pick, her favorite speculative book is The Three Body Problem. 

Makenzie Beckstead is studying English Education at Utah Valley University. Her work has been published in magazines such as potted purple, Crossed Paths, and Kalopsia Literary Journal. Other than writing, she spends her time buying too many houseplants and waiting for a certain timelord with a blue box to whisk her off to see the stars.

Grace Zhang is a student from New York with a strong interest for writing and economics. She has served as the executive writer and editor for various platforms, as well as the editor in chief of a literary platform. Outside of school, she enjoys painting and listening to music.

Zoe Reay-Ellers is a high school junior from Washington State. You can find her work in The Heritage Review and The Eunoia Review. When she’s not spending hours slaving over her keyboard, she can be found backpacking remote mountains, making fun of star wars movies, and re-enacting musicals in her kitchen.

C.T. Dinh (she/they) is a DMV-based artist and writer. She edits Backslash Lit and has work featured in Flash Point SF, Strange Horizons, and Ample Remains. This fall, she will enter the University of Maryland to major in Immersive Media Design.

Dhwanee Goyal (she/her) is a sixteen-year-old student from Maharashtra, India. An editor-in-chief of Indigo Literary Journal, her work appears or is forthcoming in Claw & Blossom, Cabinet of Heed, Kissing Dynamite, and more. Her twitter handle is @pparallell, and her micro-chapbook, ‘Kasauli Daydreams,’ will be out from Ghost City Press in summer ‘21. 

Kristie Song is a writer, illustrator, and journalist pursuing her Master's at U.C. Berkeley. She is a memory scavenger and often explores the past in her stories and drawings. Her work is featured in Ouch Magazine, Canto Cutie, and is forthcoming in the 2021 Jack Straw Anthology. 

Amanda Kay (she/her) is a rising senior in high school from Santa Clara, California. Her work can be found in Kissing Dynamite, the Bitter Fruit Review, and Second Revolution Magazine. In her free time, she enjoys listening to music, walking sandy beaches, and drinking caffeinated beverages.
